Every surface that moves on an airplane is controlled by one hidden system. Engines turn pumps that pressurize special fluid to incredibly high power. That pressurized fluid travels through pipes to move pistons and cylinders. Hydraulic fluid is incompressible, so pressure creates enormous mechanical force. When the pilot lowers the gear, hydraulic pressure extends cylinders downward. The wings flaps angle down using the exact same pressurized system. Brake pedals send pressure to wheel brake units that slow the plane. The nose wheel is also steered using hydraulic pressure from the cockpit. Modern planes have two or three separate hydraulic systems running at once. If engines fail, backup pumps keep hydraulics running on battery power. Heated hydraulic fluid runs through coolers to prevent system damage. If one line fails, other pressurized systems take over immediately without delay. Without hydraulics, pilots could not move control surfaces or land safely. Now you know what moves every plane through the sky.
