A philosophy PhD turned defense innovator built Palantir into a $450 billion company by solving problems others wouldn't touch. Meet Alex Karp's remarkable journey from academic to Silicon Valley disruptor.
Alex Karp is a philosophy PhD who became the leader of Palantir, a defense software company. He was brought in by his friend Peter Thiel in 2004 to help run the company and raise funding.
Palantir built software to find terrorists in large datasets and differentiated itself by putting engineers inside customer organizations to ensure the software actually worked. Alex's strategy of having customers try and compare their product led to major contracts, including beating Raytheon's $3 billion Army system after winning a legal challenge.
The CIA was Palantir's first major customer, backing the company in exchange for having engineers work alongside CIA analysts for 3 years to develop the product to meet their needs.
