Shane Copeland launched Polymarket as a crypto prediction market, faced regulatory challenges and an FBI raid, then secured a $2 billion investment from ICE's Jeff Sprecher, reaching a $9 billion valuation.
From FBI raid to $2 billion investment: Shane Copeland built Polymarket into a $9 billion prediction market platform, becoming the youngest self-made billionaire at 27.
Shane Copeland is an entrepreneur who launched Polymarket, a crypto prediction market platform where users bet on real-world events like elections and economic outcomes. He became the youngest self-made billionaire at 27 after ICE and the NYSE's parent company invested $2 billion in his company.
After $3.6 billion flowed through Polymarket during the 2024 U.S. election, FBI agents raided Shane's apartment and seized his devices. The investigation was later dropped, and within a week Polymarket acquired QCX, a licensed exchange, opening a path to a legal U.S. relaunch.
In 2022, the CFTC fined Polymarket $1.4 million and blocked all U.S. users because regulators were not satisfied with how the platform was operating. The platform had grown rapidly after launching in 2020 with its first major bet on when New York City would reopen after COVID.
