THE SWIMSUIT PROBLEM, SOLVED IN NEW YORK

Ask any designer who has tried it: modest swimwear is the hardest garment in the business. A dress can be lengthened. A blouse can gain a sleeve. But a swimsuit has to solve four problems at once, and they actively fight each other. It must cover, which means fabric. It must not become heavy or transparent when wet, which means the fabric has to be extraordinary. It must move with a body that is swimming rather than posing, which means the cut has to be athletic. And it must look like something a woman chose rather than something she settled for, which means it has to be beautiful. Most brands solve two of the four and call it a collection. ReefinedYou is built on all four, and on a fifth condition most of the category quietly skips: the fabric is recycled, and it is premium recycled, which are not the same thing. Recycled swim fabric has a reputation problem for good reason. The cheap end of it pills, thins, and gives up its stretch by the second season, which is how a garment marketed as sustainable ends up in landfill faster than the virgin nylon it replaced. Premium recycled yarn is a different material entirely, with the recovery and chlorine resistance to survive real use. It costs more. It is the only version of the promise that actually keeps it. Then there is the New York part, which in swimwear is close to unheard of. Almost the entire category is produced offshore, in long lead times and large minimums, which is precisely why so much modest swim looks like a standard suit with panels added at the last minute. Cutting and sewing in New York means short runs, fast correction, and a designer who can stand next to the sample and fix the neckline before it ships. In a garment where a quarter inch decides whether a woman feels covered or exposed, proximity is not a luxury. It is the method. The resort half of the proposition is the part that turns swimwear into a wardrobe. A modest swim collection that stops at the water leaves its customer with a problem at lunch. Resort pieces, the cover ups, the wide legged trousers, the long dresses that go from the pool to a table without a change, are what make the whole thing usable on an actual holiday with an actual family. It is a category that understands its customer is on a trip, not at a photoshoot. On the Leman Ballroom runway on September 10, this is the collection that resolves an argument the show has been having with itself all night. The predecessor edition in Miami put modest swim and string bikinis on the same runway on purpose, because the premise was never that there is one correct way to be a Jewish woman. ReefinedYou is proof that the modest end of that spectrum is not the conservative end. It is the technical end, the one with the harder engineering problem and the higher fabric bill.
