THE AI HEADACHE: Are We Creating a New Neurological Side Effect of the AI Era?
AI does not get tired. Humans do. For the first time, millions of people can work beside an intellectual system that responds almost instantly, never asks to continue tomorrow and never needs a break. That may be creating a human problem we did not anticipate. In 2026, reports from intensive AI users have begun describing headaches, exhaustion, eye strain, physical tension and difficulty disengaging from AI-assisted work. One Claude Code user described developing a headache that persisted for weeks after months of coding late into the night, eventually seeing a neurologist. Another AI professional described increased sessions and context switching followed by exhaustion and a severe headache. These are anecdotes, not clinical evidence, but importantly, they are not a single anecdote. At the same time, researchers have begun formally studying something called AI fatigue. A 2026 study involving four studies and 717 participants identified cognitive overload, emotional strain, behavioural disengagement and physical exhaustion as components of AI fatigue. Against that background, a particularly unusual headache case raises a question worth investigating. An intensive AI user working approximately 12 to 15 hours per day developed a new type of headache he had never experienced before. It was not a normal whole-head headache. It was one spot. Approximately one centimetre in diameter. Upper-left scalp, roughly around the 11 o'clock position. It remained in exactly the same location. At maximum intensity, the sensation was approximately 7 out of 10 and was described as knife-like. Touching the exact location increased the pain. During the broader episode, symptoms also involved the eye, jaw, neck and shoulders. The individual noticed jaw clenching and frequently worked for extended periods in poor laptop positions, particularly from a sofa or chair. Then something else happened. The pain began to disappear. Over approximately three weeks to six weeks, it progressively became weaker. Strong became moderate. Moderate became occasional. Occasional became barely perceptible. At the time of writing, approximately 99% of the symptom has disappeared, although a faint sensation can occasionally still be detected in exactly the original location. There is no evidence that AI caused this particular headache. But perhaps that is not yet the right question. The more interesting question is this: Has AI created a type of working behaviour that the human body has never previously experienced at this scale?
